The Flag of Singapore

Singapore is an island city-state located in Southeast Asia, It sits just above the equator, at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, with Indonesia to the south and west, and Malaysia to the north and east.

Singapore was first settled by Malay peoples in the mid 650s, this area then became a trading post due to its good location on the staits of Malacca. Singapore was then part of various Hindu, Islamic and Buddhist kingdoms / sultanates until 1819 when the British took control and made it part of their empire, along with Malaysia. During WW2 the Japanese briefly controlled Singapore, before they were defeated and the British regained control and eventually gave Singapore and Malaysia its independence as the Federation of Malaya. After several political and economic disagreements between Malaysia and Singapore, the Parliament of Malaysia voted to kick Singapore out of the Federation. This led to Singapore going on its own as a city-state. This could have been considered a blessing in disguise, as Singapore got to enact the political and economic reforms that it wanted; transforming a poor trading post into a global hub for commerce and finance, as well as its citizens boasting a high IQ, all in the space of 30 years. Singapore today is also one of the most richest, clean and highest developed countries in the world.

The flag of Singapore, consists of a horizontal bicolour of red above white, overlaid in the canton (top-left) by a white crescent moon facing a pentagon of five small white five-pointed stars. The elements consists of the flag denotes a young nation on the ascendant brotherhood and equality and nation ideals.

The red symbolises "the universal brotherhood and equality of man" whilst the white symbolises the "pervading and everlasting purity and virtue". The waxing crescent moon represents "a young nation on the ascendant".
