Introduction

Go, also known as Golang, is a statically typed, compiled programming language designed at Google by Robert Griesemer, Rob Pike and Ken Thompson. Go is syntactically similar to C, but with memory safety, garbage collection, structural typing, and CSP-style concurrency.

There are two major implementations:

Google's self-hosting compiler toolchain targeting multiple operating systems, mobile devices and WebAssembly
gccgo, a GCC frontend

There is another transpiler called GopherJS, complies Go to JavaScript for front-end web development, it is third party.

Go was designed at Google in 2007 to improve programming productivity. It first appeared to the public in 2009.

Features

Go is influenced by C, but is safer and more simple. The language consists of the following features:

A syntax and environment adopting patterns more common in dynamic languages, which includes fast compilation times, concise variable declarations, and remote package management.
Distinctive approaches to particular problems which includes built in concurrency primitives, interface system of virtual inheritance, type embedding and a toolchain that produces statically linked native binaries without external dependencies.

Ease of use - It is easy to understand Golang, as easy to understand as Python and JS. The syntax is clean and accessible to newcomers, and there aren't a lot of complex functions to learn. But that slick and clean syntax offers advantages to more than just new users. The code is also similar to C-style languages such as C# and C++.	Can sometimes be too simplistic - Since it is easy to pick up, Go also brings a lack of versatility. Swift and Haskell for example are complex but are more difficult to learn, but have so much more to offer if you need certain niche solutions. By stripping out this high-level functionality, Go also sacrifices range.
A smart standard library - Go users can accomplish a lot without having to import or learn complicated secondary libraries. The standard library that comes packaged with Go is sophisticated without overwhelming, and it reduces the risk of errors from conflicting function names. Take the example of slices. It's one of Go's smartest additions to the programming world, and they offer a simpler way for incorporating data structures into your code blocks. A number of tasks that would require complicated workarounds in other languages can be accomplished with a single line of code through the Go interface.	It's still a young language - Go has a lot less library support than some of the more established and older langages like Java. It may take some time for Go to have a huge community, backed by a wealth of resources, but it is possible.
Strong security built in - Simpler code is generally safer than complicated code, and that's absolutely the case with Go. As a statistically typed language, you don't have to worry about complex and hard to identify errors that come from the huge number of variable types present in more dynamic languages. Then there's the included garbage collector which helps to prevent memory from leaking. While the lack of generics means that coders need to be more diligent in running tests, identifying errors is easier than it is in many alternatives, and that generally promotes a more thorough approach to writing clean code.	Lack of virtual machine - Go is not based on virtual machines, yet a lot of the more popular languages are. VMs offer more efficient code, that that means that Go file sizes often dwarf those of competing programming languages. While Google has slowly been improving the efficiency of the language in the past few years, you can still expect more complex programs written with Go to quickly chew through your RAM.
Google's prominence in the industry - Since Google is dominant in the search engine field, as well as having a huge share in the office program and mobile app fields, they probably wont be going anywhere soon. Go will most likely play a part in Google's architecture for a long time.	It hasn't quite found it's niche - Go has yet to find a name for itself in the larger world. JavaScript has however, become the language du-jour for complex front end programming and Python has found a place in the world of data visualization and analysis, Go has yet to make a good argument for where it exists in the wider programming ecosystem. And since Go is owned by Google, businessmen and senior developers outside of Google may be hesitant to use a language which is essentially owned by a possible competitor.
Smart Documentation - While Go is a simple language to both write and read, that doesn't remove the need to document programs. Standard policies are in place for documenting all the included functions and libraries, and Google's langauge even alerts you when you forget to put documentation in place. That's an especially valuable asset for younger programmers, who have a tendancy to fall into sloppy documentation habits early on.	No GUI library - Go is a good choice for Simple Page Applications. Though, Go has no GUI library which means a lot of time and knowledge you'll need to connect a library to your app instead of using native solutions like Python or Java.

Golang is an interesting and new(ish) language to learn. It is similar to many of the C-style and popular languages which should make it easy to learn. However, it is not really complex, and has still got a long way to go to reach the level of a "prominent programming language". There is a good chance that it will get there, just as C# did. There is evidence here that Go is starting to be used and demanded in more front end website development positions and that more companies are starting to use it. Go2 is also coming out soon so that might even propell this language into prominency. A good language to learn!
