1st Table is your table.

2nd Table is your table but with data cells that expose what your table actually looks like.

3rd Table I try to display your intended output clearly.

The numbers in the table head is to show the columns.

You will notice some extra cell data.

when you use colspan it will still be a single cell, but it will take up the space of cells in a row horizontally.

Simply delete the td that contain the words cell. They are just there to show you what is happening to with the table data. When you use colspan.
