Introduction

Cascading Style Sheets (or CSS for short) is a style sheet language that describes the style of an HTML document. It describes how HTML elements should be displayed, I.E. determines the presentation of a webpage. It is usually in building websites along with JavaScript and HTML.

CSS was created in 1996 and was first proposed by (and later developed by) Hakon Wium Lie.

Pros/Cons

CSS has its pros and cons:

Saves time - Whilst editing a big website you can edit the changes on a single CSS file which refernces all pages on the website to that file. (ie class selectors for example)	Cross-Browser Issues - Different browsers have differently levels of compatibility. CSS works differently on different browsers.
Repositioning of HTML elements / Layout of website is easy to learn and grasp.	Vulnerable - CSS is easily open because of it's text-based system, a hacker could easily deface your website if you dont have more security.
Improves Page Loading Speed - Code density on your website contributes to its speed, the more the code, the slower the website gets. Only a small amount of code is CSS is needed to sort things out.	Slight confusion for beginners - CSS (and its many layers) arent a fully fledged programming language but they also aren't a simple procedurable based language either, many parts of CSS are different, for example, the syntax of Selectors and the order of which you code CSS.
Device Compatibility - CSS changes are device friedly. Web pages are responsive with CSS so that they end up displaying in the same manner on all devices.	SASS, LESS, other frameworks and media queries are needed to make top notch responsive websites - This means you may need to devote hours upon hours learning CSS and other technologies to become a wizard at styling websites.

Summary

In conclusion:

CSS is fundamentally a good technology / language to learn as it opens the doors to similar technologies down the line such as SASS and LESS, as well as frameworks. It is also one of the essential building blocks to form a nicely styled website. There is a lot about CSS to learn and it is much harder to learn than HTML, but slightly easier than JavaScript.
