What is it?

Before being a famous film, The Lord of the Rings was a book written in three parts by J.R.R. Tolkien. He worked during 14 years on it, and finally published his work between 1954 and 1955.

J.R.R Tolkien was born in 1892 in Bloemfontein (South Africa) in an english family. After his father's dead in 1896, the family went back to England and lived in Sarehole.

He studied at Oxford, where he learnt litterature. In 1937, he released his first famous book, The Hobbit, which was originally written for his own children.

After 14 years of writing, he published in 1954 the first book of the trilogy The Lord of the Rings, and one year later the two others. That was a real success.

J.R.R Tolkien died in 1973.

The film

The trilogy was shot between 1999 and 2000 in New-Zealand, and the three films (The fellowship of the Ring, The two Towers and The return of the King) were released between 2001 and 2003.
