James Gosling

Java Invented in 1995

Java is one of the most popular and successful programming languages. Dr. James Arthur Gosling has invented Java and best known as the father of the Java programming language.

Java was developed and supported earlier by Sun Microsystem and now by Oracle, after their acquisition of Sun Microsystem in January 2010.

Dennis Ritchie

C Invented in 1972

Bell Labs. Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie (September 9, 1941 – c. October 12, 2011) was an American computer scientist. He created the C programming language and, with long-time colleague Ken Thompson, the Unix operating system and B programming language.

C is still very popular and used extensively in System programming. It’s older than Java but still maintains its stronghold.

Bjarne Stroustrup

C++ Invented in 1979

Stroustrup is best known for his work on C++. In 1979, he began developing C++ (initially called "C with Classes"). In his own words, he "invented C++, wrote its early definitions, and produced its first implementation [...] chose and formulated the design criteria for C++, designed all its major facilities, and was responsible for the processing of extension proposals in the C++ standards committee." C++ was made generally available in 1985. For non-commercial use, the source code of the compiler and the foundation libraries was the cost of shipping (US$75); this was before everyone had Internet access. Stroustrup also published a textbook for the language in 1985, The C++ Programming Language.

Anders Hejlsberg

C# Invented in 2000

Anders Hejlsberg is a prominent Danish software engineer who co-designed several popular and commercially successful programming languages and development tools. He was the original author of Turbo Pascal and the chief architect of Delphi.

C# is a general-purpose language designed for developing apps on the Microsoft platform and requires the .NET framework on Windows to work. C# is often thought of as a hybrid that takes the best of C and C++ to create a truly modernized language. Although the .NET framework supports several other coding languages, C# has quickly become one of the most popular.

Guido van Rossum

Python Invented in 1989

In December 1989, Van Rossum had been looking for a "'hobby' programming project that would keep [him] occupied during the week around Christmas" as his office was closed when he decided to write an interpreter for a "new scripting language [he] had been thinking about lately: a descendant of ABC that would appeal to Unix/C hackers". He attributes choosing the name "Python" to "being in a slightly irreverent mood (and a big fan of Monty Python's Flying Circus)"

Rasmus Lerdorf

PHP Invented in 1995

Rasmus Lerdorf is a Danish-Canadian programmer. He co-authored and inspired the PHP scripting language, authoring the first two versions of the language and participating in the development of later versions led by a group of developers including Jim Winstead (who later created blo.gs), Stig Bakken, Shane Caraveo, Andi Gutmans, and Zeev Suraski. He continues to contribute to the project.

No matter how much you hate PHP, you just can’t ignore the fact that half of the internet is running on this wonderful internet language. PHP was originally created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995.

Larry Wall

Perl Invented in 1980

Larry Arnold Wall is an American computer programmer and author. He created the Perl programming language. Wall developed the Perl interpreter and language while working for System Development Corporation, which later became part of Unisys

It is still the main language to develop reports, scripts on UNIX systems. Perl is known for parsing and processing large text files and its used in CGI, database applications, network programming, and graphics programming.

Brendan Eich

JavaScript Invented in 1995

Brendan Eich is an American technologist and creator of the JavaScript programming language. He co-founded the Mozilla project, the Mozilla Foundation and the Mozilla Corporation, and served as the Mozilla Corporation's chief technical officer and briefly, as its chief executive officer.

Eich started work at Netscape Communications Corporation in April 1995. Eich originally joined intending to put Scheme "in the browser", but his Netscape superiors insisted that the language’s syntax resemble that of Java. The result was a language that had much of the functionality of Scheme, the object-orientation of Self, and the syntax of Java. The first version was completed in ten days in order to accommodate the Navigator 2.0 Beta release schedule, and was called Mocha, but renamed LiveScript in September 1995 and later JavaScript in December.

Yukihiro Matsumoto

Ruby Invented in 1995

Yukihiro Matsumoto( Matsumoto Yukihiro, born 14 April 1965), also known as Matz, is a Japanese computer scientist and software programmer best known as the chief designer of the Ruby programming language and its reference implementation, Matz's Ruby Interpreter (MRI).

Ruby is influenced by Perl, Ada, Lisp, and Smalltalk and designed for productive and enjoyable programming. Ruby is mostly used for web application development and used by major sites like Twitter, Hulu, and Groupon.

John McCarthy

Lisp Invented in 1950

John McCarthy was an American computer scientist and cognitive scientist. McCarthy was one of the founders of the discipline of artificial intelligence. He coined the term "artificial intelligence" (AI), developed the Lisp programming language family, significantly influenced the design of the ALGOL programming language, popularized time-sharing, invented garbage collection, and was very influential in the early development of AI.

Niklaus Wirth

Pascal Invented in 1968-69

Niklaus Emil Wirth (born 15 February 1934) is a Swiss computer scientist. He has designed several programming languages, including Pascal, and pioneered several classic topics in software engineering. In 1984 he won the Turing Award, generally recognized as the highest distinction in computer science, for developing a sequence of innovative computer languages.

Martin Odersky

Scala Invented in 2004

Martin Odersky is a German computer scientist and professor of programming methods at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. He specializes in code analysis and programming languages. He designed the Scala programming language and Generic Java both with others.
