Introduction

Java is a high-level programming language developed by Sun Microsystems (later acquired by Oracle). It was originally designed for developed for developing programs for set-top boxes but eventually became a popular choice for creating web applications.

Java first came to prominence in 1995. The syntax of Java is similar to C++, but it is strictly an object-oriented programming language.

Features

Java programs are not run directly by the operating system. Instead, Java programs are interpreted by the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which runs on multiple platforms. This allows Java to be widely used on different platforms made by companies such as Apple and Microsoft and UNIX. The JVM is included as part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

Programs built and run using Java usually contain classes, as the language is strictly an object-oriented programming one.

Java can also be multithreaded which means that in a program with at least two or more parts can run simultaneaously. (For example: Watching a video whilst it buffers). Since this feature is built in, it provides an advantage over other OO-Programming languages.

There are so many features in Java which makes it a staple in many software companies and big buinsesses in use in many applications. According to Oracle: Over 3 Billion devices run Java

Pros/Cons

Java is a strictly typed object-oriented programming language so it is very well structured and organised.	Java is a strictly typed object-oriented programming language. This makes Java more likely to produce more errors than any other programming language.
Compared to older programming languages like C++, Java has a simplified Syntax. This cuts down on the time to build programs.	However Java is much harder to learn than other OO-Programming languages due to how strict it is.
Java is a staple of enterprise computing. It is used by many top companies (in their applications / frameworks).	However, Java can be easily replaced as seen with Apple replacing Java with their homemade programming language - Swift.
Java continues to evolve with new standards which include JSON APIs and Lambda capabilities.	There have been many Java security issues since 2010. Especially concerning Java in browsers - Many browser games have started to disable the use of Java Applets in favour of other frameworks / technologies such as HTML5.
