Guillermo Del Toro Gómez

Guillermo del Toro Gomez was born on October 9, 1964 in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico. He is a film director, screenwriter, producer, and novelist. He grew in a Catholic home and as a teenager was obsessed with "the macabre."

Del Toro began writting short stories during high school. He was inspired by The Exorcist to create his own special effects company, Necropia.

Cronos

In 1993 Del Toro made his feature debut with the Spanish/English film cronos. It earned 8 Ariel awards from the Mexican Academy of Film. He followed up with Mimic in 1997 and The Devil's Backbone in 2001 and Pan's Labyrinth in 2006.

His most recent film, The Shape of Water received critical acclaim and won a Golden Lion at the 74th Venice International Film Festival as well as the Academy Award for Best Picture. Del Toro also received an Academy Award for Best Director for the film, as well as the Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, Critics' Choice Award, and Directors Guild of America Award.

Del Toro is one of the founding members of the Film Studies Center and the Muestra del Cine Mexicano (Mexican Film Festival) in his hometown and has taught and headed film workshops since he was 15 years old. He has also served as a juror on the selection committee of the Mexican Film Institute, Sundance Institute and the Spirit Awards.

After the production of Mimic, in the US, Del Toro returned to Mexico. In Mexico he started his own production company called the Tequila Gang.
