So, first we have to take a look at the coordinate system of most graphics libraries.

Notice how 0 is at the top? Ok.
Good. Now this means, that when we want our sprite to move down, we have to add to the Y coordinate, same with the X and moving right.
So now, lets look at it.
y = 0
x = 0
dy = 5
dx = 5
Now, we want to make a jump Motion. So, every time something jumps, gravity is still acting on it. Now, to jump we subtract dy from y, and subtract 1 from dy. Every time you jump, dy is reset to 5. this will give a smooth jump motion, which also looks realistic!
