Classification of Computers

The computer is also classified on the basis of working principle.

On the Basis of Working Principle

On the basis of working principle,computer is categorized into three types:Analog computers,Digital computers,and Hybrid computers.

Analog Computer

An analog computer is a form of computer that uses continuous physical phenomena such as electrical,mechanical,or hydraulic quantities to model the problem being solved.

Some of the characteristics of analog computers are listed below:

Based on continuous varying data
Measures only natural or physical values
Accuracy is low because of noise and less filtering facility
Used for special purpose

Examples:Thermometres,Speedometers,Multimeters,etc.

Digital Computer

A computer that performs calculations and logical operations with quantities represented as digits,usually in the binary number system(0s and 1s)is called didital computer.

Some of the characteristics of digital computers are listed below:

Based on discrete data which are not continuous with time
Normally used for general purpose
More reliable because of less noise and high filtering capacity
It has multipurpose system and is programmable

Examples:IBM PC,Apple/Macintosh,etc

Hybrid Computer

A combination of computers which are able to input and output both digital and analog signals is called hybrid computer.

Some of the characteristics of hybrid computers are listed below:

Combines good qualities of analog as well as digital computer
Can process both continuous and digital data
These are special purpose machines
These computers normally have high cost

Examples:RoBoHoN,Lukaw,Asimo,Blender,Magnesium speaker,etc.

Another way of categorizing computers is based on power and size.On the basis of power and size ,there are four types of computers which are super computer,Mainframe computer,mini-computer and Micro computer.Furthermore some researchers also claims "Workstatons" as the another type on the basis of power and size.Actually,Workstations is like a personal computer,but has more powerful microprocessor.
