Argentina Flag

Argentina, officially the Argentine Republic, is a country located mostly in the southern half of South America. It is bordered by Chile to the west, Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, Brazil to the northeast, Uruguay and the the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Drake Passage to the south. By land area it is the largest speaking Spanish nation on the planet. Argentina is a multicultural (mostly european descent) country with French, British, German, Italian and Spanish influences.

Argentina was originally settled by Amerindian hunter gatherers and some small societies of different peoples. Later on, the Mapuche peoples from Chile conquered some of these cultures, and even the Incas had a presence in the northwest of the country. By the 16th Century, the Spanish colonised Argentina; the future capital, Buenos Aires was founded in 1580, as well as other small colonies. Eventually, by the early 19th Century, due to the declining power of the Spanish Empire, independence struggles began in 1810 and 1816, which formed Argentina as an independent state. During the rest of the 19th Century, Argentina exprienced social upheaval, civil wars and wars with its neighbours. By 1900, Argentina, due to being a huge exporter in agricultural products and foods, became a relatively developed country with living stands on par of that with France. After 1930, due to instability caused by advances in industry (by the rest of the world), dictatorships, class struggles and among other factors, Argentina's living standards and economy began to decline, whilst the rest of the world's began to improve. In 1982, because of the economic struggles, and civil unrest, Argentina's dictator, Galtieri authorised an Invasion of the Falkland Islands which was initially successful, until the British recaptured them and that defeat forced him out of power and eventually led to Argentina becoming a democratic country once again. Today, Argentina is a second world country and still suffers from economic crashes and currency devalutations, but does not suffer from much civil unrest as it had used to.

The flag of Argentina, is a triband, composed of three equally wide horizontal bands coloured light blue and white. It was first raised in te city of Rosario on February 27, 1812, during the Argentine War of independence. Also, a yellow Sun of May appears in the center, this was added in 1818.

On the flag, there are conflicing theories about how the colours came to be on the flag. One theory states that the colours are supposed to represent the sky, clouds and sun, other historians usually disregard this idea, and attribute them to loyalty towards the House of Bourbon.
