Finland 100

100 years from today, Finland declared its independance from Soviet Union, after the Russian Empire collapsed on 1917. I have gathered a small slideshow of Finlands greatest technological advances since then. Tap the screen once to go forwards.

Probably one of the most known Finnish inventions, are the Nokia mobilephones. The Nokia we all know today, was founded on 1966, but the corporation for first hundred years of its existance actually manufactored generic plastic products.

SSH (AKA Secure SHell) is a protocol used for encrypted data transfers. It was first founded on 1995 at Aalto-university by a researcher Tatu Ylönen. Ylönen was prompted to come up with this encryption protocol, as a solution against password-sniffing attacks.

All of us know what Linux kernel is, but not that many are aware of the history. It was actually created by Linus Torvalds on 1991 at the university of Helsinki, after he had gotten frustrated on MINIX:s licensing.

Most of us know IRC (AKA Internet Relay Chat) as a way of communication in various forms. It was actually created by Jarkko Oikarinen on 1988 at University of Oulu. He created it to advance his work and quickly universities world-wide adapted it.
