What are tags?

Tags are words or phrase we can use to describe the topic or category for a discussion thread. Tags can be used to specify a language name that is relevant with the question, and/or specific tutorial/lesson subject relevant to the issue brought up for discussion in the forum.

In SoloLearn forum, as you probably know already, we are encouraged to discuss topics around programming/coding, and topics surrounding SoloLearn as a platform. So if we're composing a new thread with SoloLearn topic in mind (feature request, suggestion etc.), then it is a good idea to have SoloLearn in the Relevant tags section.

Tags serves as search terms.

When we're viewing a thread, we can click or tap on one of the words in the Relevant Tags section, which will redirect us to the search page with the selected tag being used as search term.

This helps us to easily search relevant threads, with similar topics in tags.

Tags are indexed by search engine

Tags are indexed by search engine, which means we should be able to quickly search the forum for threads around similar topic by using specific word or phrase as search term(s)

Is it at all important? but why?

Yes it is important.

The search engine uses the words in the Relevant tags section (and also the question title) when finding matches to the search terms given.

Why is it important?

When a thread is not properly tagged, it may not show up in search results because none of its tags match the search term. So it is very important to properly tag your threads for better accuracy and performance of the search engine

Some people also are accustomed to searching for threads related specifically to their interests. And so they search the forum by a certain search term, which could for example, be a programming language name.

We improve our chances for good and/or relevant answers for our threads when we use proper tags because people who searches for the word in our thread's tags should be able to find our thread, and thus, also be able to respond appropriately

How do I tag my thread properly?

Tag one or more relevant language(s) when the thread topic is related with the said language(s). For example, put Python in tags when you post a question related to Python programming.
A specific subject may also be included in the tags where necessary. For example, when the question is about images in HTML, we can tag
HTML images

Another example, we can tag
C++ vector when our question is related to C++ vector container.
Tag SoloLearn when the thread carries anything related with SoloLearn. That includes a suggestion/feedback, feature request, course request, possible bug report etc. Note that it is advised to contact SoloLearn team via e-mail for a direct response.
Tips
- Avoid use of emojis in tags
- Avoid writing code in tags
- Avoid writing or copy/pasting your question in tags, or writing sentence in tags.
- Mind the spelling, in both the thread title and tags. It is crucial because these two are visible to forum visitors even before they open the thread to see more details. Spelling is very important, misspelled words in thread title and/or tags are not helpful, and can be rather misleading.
- Avoid use of whitespaces, special characters and/or punctuations in tags.
- Prefer use of a hyphen as word separator rather than spaces, for example
  multiple-inheritance
  
  Underscores can also be used as word separator, for example
  multiple_background_images
- When your problem is solved, you may add solved in the tags to support searchability of solved cases in Q&A
