History

The word Bandung is derived from the word weir or dam because it is blocked by the Citarum river by the Tangkuban Parahu lava which then forms a lake. The legend told by old people in Bandung said that the name Bandung was taken from a water vehicle consisting of two boats tied side by side called the Bandung boat used by the Regent of Bandung, R.A. Wiranatakusumah II, to sail Ci Tarum in search of a new district seat for the district replacing the old capital city in Dayeuhkolot.

Based on the Sundanese philosophy, the word Bandung also comes from the Nga-Bandung-Banda Indung sentence, which is a sacred and sublime sentence because it contains the value of Sundanese teachings. Nga-Bandung means to witness or testify. Banda is everything that exists in the living world, that is, on earth and the atmosphere, both living and inanimate objects. The synonym of banda is treasure. Indung means Mother or Earth, also known as Mother Earth where Banda is located.

Geographical

The city of Bandung is surrounded by mountains, so the morphological shape of the region is like a giant bowl, geographically the city is located in the middle of the province of West Java, and is located at altitude ± 768 m above sea level, with the highest point in the north with an altitude of 1,050 meters above sea level and the south is a low area with an altitude of 675 meters above sea level.

The city of Bandung has two main rivers, the Cikapundung River and the Citarum River and their tributaries which generally flow to the south and meet at the Citarum River. With conditions that are thus, south Bandung is very vulnerable to flooding problems especially in the rainy season.

The Zeiss Double Refractor is the largest type of telescope to look at stars. This object is placed on the dome roof so that when binoculars are used, the roof must be opened. Bosscha Observatory may be visited by anyone, without a ticket. However, for those who want using the Zeiss telescope, is required to register. For institutions or educational institutions, the schedule is given Tuesday to Friday. Meanwhile, individual visits are opened every Saturday.
