What if you were the father AND the mother of your child?

There are lifeforms, like rainworms and many plants, that have male and female body parts. Sometimes those so-called hermaphrodites reproduce with themselves. There's also an episode of Doctor Who in which a machine uses the Doctor's DNA to create a "child" for him.

At first I thought the children had to be clones of the hermaphroditic parent because no new DNA is added. But then I realized that the chromosomes are redistributed.

For every biological trait you have two alleles in your genotype (DNA), one from each parent. For the trait "eye color" one of the alleles might say "brown" and the other one might say "blue". Since brown is dominant over blue here (blue is recessive), your eyes will be brown. If both alleles are recessive, the phenotype (visible trait) will be a mixture between them.

If you get a child, it inherits one of your two alleles for every trait (which one, that's random). But it also inherits one allele from the other parent, so the it has two alleles again. In this code a person gets a child with themselves. That means that each of the child's two alleles is a random allele from the parent. For example, if the person's alleles for the eye color are "brown" and "blue", then the child's alleles could be "brown/blue" (probability: 50 %), "brown/brown" (25 %) or "blue/blue" (25 %).

If it's "blue/blue", the child (F1) will have blue eyes even though the parent (P) has brown eyes. And since the child only has blue alleles, all of its descendants (F2, …) will have the same genotype for this trait. In one generation (typically around F6/F7) the descendant will be homozygous (both alleles are the same) in every trait, so every further descendant will be completely identical.

You'll find that some of the traits in this program don't make sense biologically (except if you assume that the favourite color and favourite toy are hereditary), but I included them anyways. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
