Blog Summary

Welcome to my blog! This is mostly just to practice with Bootstrap 4 and to familiarize myself with more web coding, but I also want to post interesting code I find on my daily attempts at coding. I'm not sure how often I will be posting an entry onto this blog, but I'll try as often as possible. I may talk about some personal stories or not; I am not really sure about doing that yet. If I can somehow keep my writing style private, while also being beneficial, I will. For now, welcome!

I'M SO BUSYOctober 8, 2018

So I have been REALLY busy! I ended up getting that job as a Solutions Developer, and it has been really great so far. I have been doing a little bit of everything there, since I have a little experience in many languages, thanks in part to SoloLearn. We work a lot with Bash terminals, XML, Python, and Perl. I will be working with some PHP as well, which is exciting! Recently I have been working on a personal project when I have time. It's going to be a web page for accessing earthquake data using the USGS API. At the moment, I only have a simple request for 15 earthquakes at a 4.5 or higher magnitude. The design took me a while to come up with, but I am really happy with what I ended up using. It uses CSS grid, which is WAY better than Bootstrap for organizing a web page. It's also really easy to make a page responsive. I think I might make some sort of 'tutorial' about it, because people need to know about it. I might also freshen up this page to use it, because it's that good :). I'll post the links to my codes in the menu above. Until next time, Happy Coding!

Fantastic DayJune 29, 2018

Today was a great day for me; I earned a SoloLearn contest win for the Crypto-Cube assignment! I immediately loved the idea and began coding my solution in C++ as soon as I saw it. Thank you to any and every one who liked the comment; I think that played a big part in my vicotry :) Today was also a the last day of interviews for a position as a Solutions Developer, and I enjoyed seeing what I could potentially be doing for my career. Who knew that coding here and teaching myself a new skill would lead me to this point? I didn't, but I'm sure glad that it did. Until next time, Happy Coding!

New Family Member!June 19, 2018

Howdy fellow coders, this post will not pertain to code as much as the previous posts, but will instead be about an exciting thing that has happened in my life. Just a couple weeks ago, I got the opportunity to take an animal from a family who no longer wanted it. It was an animal that I had thought about getting several times in the past, but I had never had quite enough money for its new setup (tank, decor, lights). Luckily for me, they weren't asking for any money at all, so I could do nothing but say YES! Now I have a Bearded Dragon, and her name is Gertrude. She loves to sit in my window sill while I code and watch the outside world. She also enjoys jogging through the grass on sunny days. Here are some pictures of her. Getting DistractedJune 5, 2018

Hello everyone! Once again, this update is quite delayed, so once again, I apologize. I have slowly been working on several projects that I started a while ago. It seems I have an addiction to starting over-ambitious ideas and not finishing them. So far I have a C++ RPG that I started a year ago, the freeCodeCamp calculator project, and learning Node database functionality with web codes. At certain points during projects like this, I will start to dig myself into holes of information until my brain becomes "overloaded" (pun intended), and then I just quit for a couple of weeks. The upside to this most recent occurance of this is that I have rediscovered one of my favorite games, Stardew Valley. Everytime I go back to coding, I go back ready an motivated, which is the goal. For all of those who feel overwhelmed, always know that time off is never a bad thing; sometimes learning is also about learning HOW to learn. Until next time, happy coding! -Zeke

It's been awhile since my last post, so apologies for that (11 people that maybe read this😉). I recently applied for a developer job in my town, which is a huge step and commitment for me. I graduated with a Civil Engineering degree and never thought that I would ever change my career path...I still love Civl Engineering - the job market for CE's in my town is just so saturated at the moment and finding entry level postions is near impossible. Anyways, the position I applied for only required a highschool diploma, and a degree in CS was only preferred. The man who started this company was also a self-taught coder, so I think he will appreciate my background. PRO TIP: For anyone looking to get a developing job in their future, PLEASE learn git and start making a portfolio on GitHub. I've been sort of slacking on the coding front, but I have been working on the freeCodeCamp Calculator app very slowly. I have it on my GitHub for those that are interested. Happy Coding as always!

Design Patterns C++April 29, 2018

Hello again! I'm back for another installment of blogging with Zeke. Tackiness aside, I found some really helpful (to me at least) code recently that I found in a link that @JPM7 commented in their code. It was a page about design patterns - specifically, factory, clone, builder, and singleton design patterns. This page also has a bunch of structural patterns as well, so a definitely recommend it. This will take you to a new tab with the page. If you have ever delved into coding your own c++ text game, you should definitely know what Factories and Clone methods are. You can find the Factory code here and the clone method here. I used more of a text RPG approach to both of these implementations and didn't use the make_unique function either, since it is a part of C++14.

I was inspired by another SL coder @Crystal.kerosene to make a blog code. I feel that it is important to be able to relate to someone else's coding path. So much of today's social media is so filtered and produced that sometimes you forget that struggling is, not only okay, but absolutely normal. No one was instantly the best coder and got the most awesome job, even though that is the only part of someone's story that we see and read; it takes A LOT of practice and even more failures, I'm sure. Personally, I constantly see code that seems like a different language, but is actually the one I've been studying. You just have to want to learn and understand what you don't. I'll post some C++ code I found extremely confusing recently.
